China Voices Support for Somalia After Visit Postponed

China has expressed support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following the postponement of a planned visit by China’s top diplomat to Mogadishu. Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with his Somali counterpart during his annual Africa tour, reaffirming backing for Somalia as tensions rise over regional issues.

The scheduled visit to Somalia, part of Wang’s New Year diplomatic tour that includes stops in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Lesotho, was delayed due to a schedule change. Beijing denied reports that the postponement was linked to security concerns, describing it as a logistical adjustment.

Message on Somaliland and Taiwan

In the call, Wang reiterated China’s opposition to Somaliland’s engagement with Taiwan authorities, stressing that such actions could undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity. Beijing reaffirmed its stance that external support for separatist movements must be avoided.

Broader Diplomatic Context

China’s outreach comes amid broader regional developments, including recent international recognition of Somaliland by at least one country, which has stirred diplomatic tensions. China’s support for Somalia aligns with its long-term interest in stability around the strategic Gulf of Aden and expanding diplomatic ties in Africa.
