China Urges Japan to Reflect on Historical Actions
China has called on Japan to engage in deep soul-searching regarding its historical actions during the early 20th century, saying Tokyo must confront what Beijing describes as past “historical crimes” and retract statements China considers misleading. The remarks were made by China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who spoke during a high-level meeting at the UN General Assembly that marked the first International Day Against Colonialism.
China’s Position on History and Diplomacy
China’s envoy said that despite the official end of colonial rule in many regions, the world still deals with the legacy of colonialism and wartime aggression. He urged the international community to reject narratives that challenge the established post-World War II order and stressed that Japan, as a former Axis power, should undertake thorough reflection on its actions during that period.
Taiwan, Diplomatic Obligations and Future Conduct
In the same context, Chinese officials linked the call for historical reflection with broader concerns about Japan’s recent diplomatic remarks, especially concerning Taiwan and other sensitive issues. Beijing has urged Tokyo to adhere to political commitments it has made in past agreements and to avoid provocative actions that could destabilise regional ties. Chinese authorities reiterated that genuine reconciliation requires confronting historical injustices and upholding agreed principles.
Impact on China-Japan Relations
The statement underscores ongoing diplomatic friction between China and Japan over history, territorial issues and regional security. These tensions contribute to periodic strains in bilateral relations, though both sides maintain economic and diplomatic engagement. China’s call for soul-searching reflects longstanding disputes about how historical events are remembered and interpreted by successive generations.
