China Supports U.S.-Russia Peace Talks on Ukraine at G20 Summit

At the recent G20 summit in Johannesburg, China expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to negotiate a peace agreement with Russia to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that China backs all efforts conducive to peace, including the recent consensus reached between the United States and Russia. He emphasized China’s willingness to continue playing a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis.

This development comes as President Trump has shifted U.S. policy by engaging directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, sidelining Ukraine in the process. Trump’s recent remarks referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “dictator” have prompted U.S. allies, including Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, to reaffirm their support for Zelenskyy.

Analysts suggest that China’s endorsement of the U.S.-Russia dialogue aims to ensure its involvement in any potential peace deal, thereby safeguarding its interests and influence in the region. While China has expressed a desire to participate in the peace process, its exact role remains cautious and primarily rhetorical at this stage.

The Trump administration has announced plans for further discussions with Russia to resolve the nearly three-year-long conflict. However, Russia has maintained firm demands, notably opposing Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.

European leaders have expressed concerns over being excluded from these negotiations and stress the importance of including Ukraine in any peace talks to ensure a comprehensive and lasting resolution.
