China Hails India Overtaking Japan as 4th Largest Economy
China has welcomed India overtaking Japan to become the world’s fourth largest economy, describing the development as a reflection of India’s growing economic strength. Responding to the milestone, a spokesperson from the Chinese side said India’s rise demonstrates that true national strength comes from recognising historical realities, learning from them and taking responsibility for future development. The remarks were made after reports confirmed that India had moved ahead of Japan in nominal gross domestic product rankings.
India surpasses Japan in economic size
India’s economy has expanded to over $4 trillion in nominal terms, placing it behind only the United States, China and Germany. The shift marks a significant change in global economic rankings and underscores India’s sustained growth over recent years. Japan, which has faced prolonged economic stagnation and demographic pressures, has slipped to fifth position in the global list.
Growth drivers highlighted
India’s economic expansion has been driven by strong domestic demand, rising consumption, infrastructure spending and increased manufacturing activity. The country continues to be among the fastest growing major economies globally, supported by a large workforce and policy reforms aimed at improving investment and productivity.
Diplomatic and regional context
China’s comments come at a time when both countries remain major economic forces in Asia despite ongoing political and strategic differences. Observers say Beijing’s acknowledgment reflects recognition of India’s economic trajectory while highlighting the shifting balance within the global economic order.
