China Foreign Minister To Skip BRICS Delhi Meet

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to skip the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi due to scheduling reasons, with Beijing likely to send a senior deputy-level representative instead.

Wang Yi To Miss BRICS Delhi Meeting

Wang Yi’s absence comes as India prepares to host the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi. The meeting is important as India currently holds the BRICS presidency and is preparing for the larger leaders’ summit later this year.

The reason cited for Wang’s absence is scheduling, though the development comes at a time when China is also engaged in high-level diplomatic activity with the United States.

BRICS Foreign Ministers Meet In India

The New Delhi meeting is expected to bring together foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS member countries. The grouping now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

The talks are likely to focus on global governance, trade, multilateral cooperation, West Asia tensions and coordination among Global South countries.

India-China Diplomacy Under Focus

Wang Yi’s absence will be watched closely because India and China have been attempting to stabilise ties after years of tension along the Line of Actual Control. Both countries have also maintained engagement through multilateral platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Despite the scheduling issue, China is expected to remain represented at the meeting. The focus will now be on the level of Beijing’s delegation and whether the BRICS platform can deliver meaningful consensus on key international issues.
