China Deploys Security Forces in Pakistan Amid Rising Terror Attacks

In a significant shift in security measures, China has deployed its security forces in Pakistan for the first time to protect its citizens and projects amid growing terror threats in the region. This development follows recent attacks by Baloch militants, including a bomb blast that targeted a Pakistani military bus and an attack on the Jafar Express, resulting in significant casualties.

The move is directly linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion-dollar project that involves extensive Chinese investment in Pakistan. With over 30,000 Chinese nationals working in various sectors, including sensitive areas such as Balochistan and Gwadar, the safety of Chinese nationals has become a growing concern. To address these threats, China signed a contract to deploy private security forces for the protection of its engineers and workers.

Three private Chinese security companies—Dewe Security Frontier Service Group, China Overseas Security Group, and Huaxin Zhongshan Security Service—have been tasked with ensuring the safety of CPEC projects. As part of the first phase, 60 Chinese security personnel have been stationed at two power projects in Sindh province to work alongside the Pakistani military forces already deployed in the region. These security forces will ensure minimal contact between Chinese nationals and the local population, with strict movement protocols in place.

Increased Military Cooperation and Investment in Security

This deployment follows increased security concerns over several incidents involving Chinese nationals, including the October 2024 suicide bombing by the Baloch Liberation Army that killed two Chinese citizens. In response, Pakistan has raised its defense budget significantly, allocating additional funds for the protection of Chinese workers and assets. China’s influence over Pakistan’s security arrangements has grown stronger, with pressure for enhanced protective measures leading to the signing of the Joint Security Companies Framework.

With an ongoing commitment to securing its investments, China continues to push for tighter controls over its nationals’ safety as CPEC projects expand, particularly in volatile regions like Balochistan.
