China Criticises US Sanctions at UN Security Council
China has criticised recent US-led sanctions on trade with Russia, saying that Western nations are using the Ukraine conflict as a pretext to impose unilateral measures that disrupt normal international trade relations. The comments were made during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in Ukraine.
Beijing’s Position
China’s deputy UN representative said Beijing opposes sanctions that are not authorised by the UN Security Council and argues that such measures can harm global trade and economic stability. China maintains it supports engagement through dialogue and has repeatedly called for negotiations to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. China also emphasised that its economic relations with Russia are legitimate and should not be targeted by punitive actions.
US Sanctions and Global Reaction
The United States and its allies have imposed multiple sanctions on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, targeting energy exports and financial institutions to pressure Moscow. Some proposed sanctions would penalise countries purchasing Russian energy, a move China has criticised as coercive.
Beijing’s criticism reflects broader tensions between major powers over how to handle the war in Ukraine and control over global economic practices. China has voiced concerns that sanctions could set precedents affecting its own trade interests.
