China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Around Taiwan

China’s military carried out live-fire drills around Taiwan, escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The People’s Liberation Army said the exercises involved coordinated operations by naval, air, ground and rocket forces in multiple zones surrounding the island. The drills included live-fire components and simulated combat scenarios, with temporary restrictions imposed on air and sea traffic in designated areas.

Taiwan Places Forces On High Alert
Taiwan’s defence ministry said it closely monitored Chinese military movements and placed its forces on heightened alert. Taipei condemned the drills as destabilising and said it deployed aircraft, naval vessels and missile systems to track and respond to the exercises. Taiwanese officials reiterated that the island would safeguard its security and democratic system.

Beijing Warns Against Independence Moves
China said the drills were aimed at deterring what it described as “separatist activities” linked to Taiwan independence and foreign interference. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has increased the frequency and scale of military activity around the island in recent years. Chinese officials said the exercises were routine and lawful, while critics view them as coercive pressure.

Regional And Global Concerns
The drills triggered concern among regional neighbours and Western governments, who urged restraint and warned against actions that could raise the risk of miscalculation. The Taiwan Strait remains a vital global trade route, and analysts say repeated military exercises increase the chances of unintended escalation.
