China Claims Mediation in India-Pakistan Tensions
China has claimed that it played a role in easing military tensions between India and Pakistan earlier this year. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing helped mediate during a brief but intense confrontation between the two South Asian neighbours, presenting the episode as part of China’s broader diplomatic engagement in regional and global conflicts.
India Rejects Third-Party Mediation Claims
India has firmly rejected China’s assertion. New Delhi has reiterated its long-standing position that all issues with Pakistan are bilateral and do not involve any third-party mediation. Indian officials have clarified that the de-escalation during the recent confrontation was achieved through direct communication between the Director Generals of Military Operations of India and Pakistan, without external involvement.
Background to the Military Tensions
The latest tensions between India and Pakistan followed a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure across the Line of Control. The situation escalated into a limited military confrontation lasting several days before both sides agreed to halt further action. Indian authorities have consistently stated that the decision to pause hostilities was taken through established military communication channels.
China’s Broader Diplomatic Narrative
Wang Yi also listed other international situations where China claims to have played a constructive role, including conflicts and tensions in West Asia and Southeast Asia. He said China’s approach focuses on dialogue and addressing the root causes of disputes. However, India’s rejection of China’s mediation claim underscores New Delhi’s sensitivity to any external involvement in its relations with Pakistan.
