China Calls Iran Succession An Internal Matter
China said Iran’s decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader is an internal matter and stressed that foreign interference in another country’s affairs should be opposed. The response came after leadership change in Tehran added a new political dimension to the widening regional conflict and triggered fresh reactions from major global powers.
China Responds To Mojtaba Khamenei Appointment
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Iran’s leadership transition should be treated as a domestic issue. He also said China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext. The statement signalled Beijing’s effort to maintain a consistent diplomatic line while avoiding direct endorsement of the succession itself.
China Stresses Iran Sovereignty And Security
Along with describing the appointment as an internal matter, China said Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected. The language reflected Beijing’s broader foreign policy position that outside powers should not shape political outcomes in other states through military pressure or political intervention. At a time when Iran is facing sustained attacks and intense external scrutiny, China’s wording carried both legal and strategic significance.
Iran Leadership Change Draws Global Attention
Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment has already become a major international issue because it came during an active war and followed the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. China’s response suggests that Beijing does not want the succession to become another front for external intervention or regime-change pressure. The remarks also underline how the leadership shift in Tehran is being watched not only through a regional security lens but also as a question of state sovereignty and international order.
