China Buys 15 Russian Oil Cargoes as India Steps Back

China has secured 15 shipments of Russian Urals crude for delivery in October and November 2025. Each cargo is estimated to hold between 700,000 and 1 million barrels. The move comes as Indian refiners reduce their imports of Russian oil, leaving an opening for Chinese buyers to take advantage of discounted rates.

India’s Import Decline

India, once the biggest buyer of Russian oil after Europe imposed sanctions, has recently pulled back. State refiners in India slowed purchases last month, citing reduced price discounts and pressure from the United States. President Donald Trump has warned of penalties on nations continuing large-scale Russian oil imports. Previously, Russian oil accounted for around 42% of India’s total crude imports, amounting to nearly 700,000 barrels per day.

Impact on Global Oil Market

Analysts say China’s increased buying could lower demand for Middle Eastern crude, which trades at $2–3 a barrel higher than Russian supplies. However, they also note that many Chinese refineries are not fully equipped to use Urals as a primary crude grade. This limits how much of India’s reduced intake can be absorbed by China.
