Chennai-Tiruvallur Schools Shut Amid Heavy Rain

On December 3, all educational institutions in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts have been closed owing to severe and persistent rainfall triggered by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah. The district authorities — Chennai District Collector and Tiruvallur District Collector — declared the holiday as continuous downpours raised fears of waterlogging and disrupted transport.

Why the Closure

The decision follows a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which issued a red-alert for Chennai and Tiruvallur, warning of very heavy rainfall over the next 24–48 hours. The rainfall has already caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, making commute risky and creating unsafe conditions for students.

Impact on Students and Institutions

All government, private and aided schools and colleges in both districts remain shut for the day. In some areas, transport disruptions and road flooding have impeded movement, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Context & Broader Situation

The closure is part of a larger safety response — other districts including Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram have also seen holiday notifications or alerts due to rain. The heavy rainfall follows the depression over the Bay of Bengal that caused Cyclone Ditwah, which has been battering coastal and nearby districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry since Monday.

Families are advised to monitor local weather alerts, and students should await updates from their respective schools on resumption of classes.
