Chennai Braces for Heavy Rain as Bay System Nears

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu are preparing for heavy rainfall as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal moves closer to the coast. The India Meteorological Department has warned that rain activity is likely to intensify over the next two days, raising concerns of waterlogging and local disruptions.

An orange alert has been issued for parts of coastal and delta districts, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Chennai and nearby districts are under a yellow alert, with forecasts pointing to spells of heavy rain at isolated locations. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Weather System and Expected Impact

The weather system, currently classified as a depression over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to influence weather conditions across northern coastal Tamil Nadu as it approaches. Increased cloud cover, strong winds, and intermittent heavy showers are likely, particularly along coastal belts.

Authorities have warned of possible traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and temporary suspension of outdoor activities. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions.

Disaster response teams and civic agencies have been placed on alert to manage any emergencies arising from intense rainfall.
