Air India is going through a “challenging time,” Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran told employees, urging them to stay focused on execution and cost discipline as the airline navigates operational and financial pressures.
Chandrasekaran Flags Challenges At Air India
Addressing employees at a townhall, Chandrasekaran acknowledged that the airline is currently facing a difficult phase. He said that while the long-term outlook remains positive, the immediate situation requires realism and discipline. He emphasised that the challenges are visible across the aviation sector, but are particularly significant for Air India as it continues its transformation journey.
Focus On Execution And Cost Discipline
Chandrasekaran urged employees to concentrate on execution and areas within their control. He stressed the need to be precise on costs and remain grounded in reality, highlighting operational efficiency as the key priority in the current phase. He also reiterated that safety remains non-negotiable and must remain central to all decisions across the airline’s operations.
Leadership Transition And External Pressures
The remarks come amid continued external pressures on the aviation industry, including supply chain disruptions, rising costs and geopolitical tensions affecting international routes. Air India has also faced operational disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict, which has affected flight schedules and increased operating pressure.
Transformation Efforts Continue
Despite the challenges, Chandrasekaran said Air India has made significant progress over the past few years. The airline has expanded its fleet, modernised systems, merged operations and improved service metrics. He said the focus now is on sustaining that momentum and ensuring consistent execution as the airline moves forward in its turnaround plan.
