Centre Withdraws CRPF Cover for Delhi CM
The Centre has decided to withdraw the Z-category security cover that had been provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The decision means her security responsibility will now rest fully with the Delhi Police. Officials said the move follows a review of recent developments after an attack on the Chief Minister last week.
Attack Sparked Initial CRPF Deployment
The enhanced CRPF cover was given immediately after the August 20 incident, when a man attempted to attack CM Gupta with a knife during a Jan Sunwai public hearing. The assault raised major concerns over her safety, prompting authorities to temporarily deploy central paramilitary personnel to guard her.
Arrests Ease Immediate Concerns
Investigations moved quickly after the attack. The prime accused, Rajesh, and his aide Tehsin, who allegedly provided financial backing for the plan, were arrested within days. With the attackers now in custody, officials concluded that the imminent threat level had reduced, allowing the Centre to roll back CRPF protection.
Delhi Police Back in Charge
Delhi Police has resumed full responsibility for the Chief Minister’s security detail. Senior officers confirmed that necessary steps have been taken to strengthen the arrangements, with additional personnel stationed at her residence and during public appearances. Authorities said the force is equipped to manage the CM’s protection based on current threat assessments.
