Centre Starts Work On Sawalkote Hydropower Project
The central government has directed authorities to begin work on the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a major step toward expanding power generation capacity in the region.
Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project Work Begins
Officials confirmed that preparatory construction activities have been ordered to commence, including site development and related infrastructure. The Sawalkote project, planned on the Chenab river, is among the largest upcoming hydropower developments in the Union Territory.
The project has faced delays for years due to technical, financial and administrative clearances, but the latest directive signals movement toward execution.
Power Capacity And Energy Benefits
Once completed, the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project is expected to generate around 1,856 MW of electricity. The plant is designed to improve energy availability in Jammu and Kashmir and contribute surplus power to the national grid.
Authorities said the project will help reduce reliance on power imports and strengthen regional energy security, particularly during peak demand seasons.
Economic And Infrastructure Impact
The construction phase is expected to generate employment and stimulate local infrastructure development. Roads, logistics networks and support facilities are likely to expand around the project site.
The project also aligns with broader plans to harness hydropower potential in the Himalayan region while supporting economic growth and electricity stability.
