Centre Receives Demand for 15,000 Electric Buses from Three States
The central government has received formal requests from three states—Gujarat, Telangana, and Karnataka—for the deployment of 15,000 electric buses. This demand is part of a broader effort under the PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme, which aims to transition India’s public transport sector toward a cleaner, more sustainable model.
Electric Buses Demand from Key States
The three states have come forward as early participants in the push for electrified public transportation, submitting their proposals for fleet augmentation. These 15,000 buses will form a substantial portion of the government’s ambitious target to roll out 50,000 electric buses nationwide by 2030. The focus is primarily on enhancing urban mobility while addressing environmental concerns in densely populated regions.
PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme Supports Green Transit
The PM e-Bus Sewa scheme is designed to aid state governments by providing central support in the form of payment security mechanisms. It facilitates a public-private partnership model, encouraging the inclusion of private players while ensuring payment guarantees for operators. The scheme specifically targets nine major cities and seven states, including Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
While Gujarat, Telangana, and Karnataka have already sent their requests, other states are expected to follow suit soon. The scheme is seen as a cornerstone in India’s electric mobility mission, aiming to make clean energy vehicles a mainstream component of public transport.
