Centre: No Formal Talks Held on F‑35 Jets with U.S.
The Indian government has clarified that it has not held any formal discussions with the United States regarding the possible purchase of F‑35 stealth fighter jets. The statement was made in response to a question in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Joint Statement Mentions Policy Review, Not Deal
During Prime Minister Modi’s U.S. visit in February, a joint statement called for Washington to review its policy on transferring advanced military equipment, including F‑35 jets and undersea systems. However, the government confirmed no official negotiations have begun on acquiring these aircraft.
U.S. Diplomacy in India–Pakistan Tensions
Separately, the government revealed that between April 22 and May 10, it engaged in diplomatic talks with multiple nations, including the U.S., to defuse rising tensions with Pakistan. In a meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on May 9, India shared that it would act appropriately if Pakistan launched major hostilities. No third‑party mediation was sought; India reiterated that issues would be settled bilaterally.
India Prioritises Strategic Autonomy
Addressing concerns on defence ties, the minister emphasized that India evaluates all military cooperation—such as arms supplies or military assistance—through the lens of national interest and strategic independence. The India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership remains grounded in trust, shared values, and expanding cooperation.
India Focuses on Indigenisation
Defence experts note that India is focusing on its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, set to mature over the next eight years, rather than pursuing foreign jet acquisitions. There are no current procurement plans for the U.S. F‑35 or Russian Su‑57 stealth jets.
