Centre Clears ₹10,637 Cr for Key Tunnels and Roads in J&K

In a major infrastructure push, the Central government has approved ₹10,637 crore for 19 crucial road, tunnel, and flyover projects in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision marks a significant step toward improving year-round accessibility, economic growth, and national security in the strategically sensitive Union Territory.

J&K Connectivity to See Massive Overhaul

The most prominent among the sanctioned projects is the Peer-Ki-Gali tunnel along the historic Mughal Road. With an estimated cost of ₹3,830 crore, the tunnel is expected to bypass snow-blocked regions like Peer Ki Gali and Bafliaz, thereby connecting Shopian in the Kashmir Valley to Poonch in Jammu throughout the year.

Another key approval is the ₹3,330 crore Sadhna tunnel on National Highway 701. This tunnel will ensure uninterrupted access between Kupwara and the Karnah valley, a region frequently cut off during winter due to heavy snowfall.

Strategic and Economic Impact

Alongside the tunnels, the plan includes a four-lane flyover from Lal Chowk to Parimpora in Srinagar, budgeted at ₹700 crore. Additional flyovers and roads such as the ₹445 crore Magam–Gulmarg section, the ₹966 crore Trehgam–Chamkote stretch on NH-701, and the ₹852 crore Zaznar–Shopian segment on NH-701A are also part of the infrastructure blueprint.

These projects will not only improve civilian mobility but are also expected to significantly enhance military logistics along sensitive border regions. Improved roadways and all-weather access will allow faster deployment of security forces and emergency services while aiding tourism and trade.

Political and Local Support

Political leaders, including Omar Abdullah and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, welcomed the approval and expressed gratitude to the central leadership. They underscored that these projects have long been in demand and would transform mobility and access across the region.

Looking Ahead

The total stretch of these projects covers approximately 296 kilometers, encompassing tunnels, bridges, flyovers, and bypass roads. With several Detailed Project Reports already in advanced stages, the government aims for rapid implementation and phased completion over the next few years.
