Centre, Chouhan Reject Claims on VB-G RAM G Scheme

The Centre and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday criticised the Congress party for spreading what they described as “misinformation” about the new rural employment law known as Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) or VB-G RAM G Act, 2025. The minister said opposition campaigners were misrepresenting the scheme’s provisions and benefits.

Scheme Compared to MGNREGA

Chouhan asserted that VB-G RAM G is a better framework than the earlier MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005) and that the new law fixes longstanding gaps in implementation. He noted that the VB-G RAM G Act guarantees 125 days of employment per rural household per year, compared with MGNREGA’s 100 days, and includes provisions such as unemployment allowance if work is not provided and interest on delayed wages.

Claims of Corruption Under MGNREGA

The minister said corruption was widespread under the previous MGNREGA system and argued that the revised law will reduce leakages through enhanced technology and direct bank transfers. He challenged the Congress to focus on constructive engagement rather than campaigning against the law.

Opposition’s Protests

The Congress has launched a nationwide campaign titled “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” demanding the repeal of VB-G RAM G and restoration of the earlier rights-based employment guarantee framework. Party leaders say the new law weakens rural job security and shifts burden onto states.

Government Funding and Support

Chouhan highlighted that substantial funds are allocated for VB-G RAM G in the next financial year, with the Centre providing the majority share of support. Officials said the act aims to align rural employment generation with broader development goals and to empower gram sabhas in planning and execution.
