Centre Approves 24% Salary Hike for MPs, Monthly Income Now ₹2.81 Lakh

The Indian government has approved a 24% increase in the salaries, pensions, and allowances of Members of Parliament (MPs), effective from April 1, 2023. This revision raises the base salary of MPs from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.24 lakh per month, while constituency allowances increase from ₹70,000 to ₹87,000, and office expenses rise from ₹60,000 to ₹70,000.

Salary and Allowance Increases for MPs

In addition to these hikes, MPs will also see a rise in their daily allowance, which increases from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. Furthermore, the one-time furniture allowance has been increased to ₹1.25 lakh from ₹1 lakh. The overall monthly assured income for MPs will now be ₹2,81,000, excluding the daily allowance and furniture allowance.

Pension and Other Benefits for Former MPs

For former MPs, the pension has been raised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000, with an increase in the additional pension for each year of service beyond five years, from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per month.

These changes mark the first salary revision for MPs since 2018. The salary, allowances, and pensions of MPs are governed under the ‘Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act’ and are revised every five years based on the Cost Inflation Index specified in the Income Tax Act of 1961.

The revision also includes a raise for Union ministers, bringing their assured monthly income to ₹2,86,000. MPs across party lines have expressed support for the increase but have also called for a revision of MPLAD (Member of Parliament Local Area Development) funds.
