Census 2027 Phase I to Begin With 33 Questions
The Union government has finalised the questionnaire for the first phase of Census 2027, which will focus on houselisting and housing conditions. Phase I of the census is scheduled to begin on April 1, 2026, and will continue for several months as part of the nationwide enumeration exercise.
Scope of the Questionnaire
The first phase will include 33 questions aimed at collecting household-level information. These questions will cover details related to the structure and condition of houses, ownership status, number of rooms, and the size of households. Enumerators will also record access to basic amenities such as drinking water, electricity, toilets, kitchens, cooking fuel, bathing facilities and internet connectivity.
Information on household assets such as mobile phones, televisions, computers and vehicles will also be collected, along with data on the primary cereal consumed by the household.
Two-Phase Census Plan
Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases. While Phase I focuses on houselisting and housing characteristics, Phase II, scheduled to begin on February 1, 2027, will cover population enumeration, including demographic and socio-economic details.
