CCS Approves ₹20,000 Crore ‘Make in India’ Projects for Su-30 Jets and K-9 Howitzers

In a significant boost to India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved two major defense projects totaling approximately ₹20,000 crore. These projects involve the procurement of 12 Su-30MKI fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers for the Indian Army.

Indigenous Production of Su-30MKI Fighter Jets

The 12 Su-30MKI fighter aircraft will be manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at its Nashik facility. Valued at around ₹13,000 crore, this project aims to replenish the IAF’s fleet by replacing aircraft lost over the years. The Su-30MKI is a frontline, all-weather, multi-role fighter jet integral to India’s air defense strategy.

Acquisition of K-9 Vajra Howitzers

The Indian Army will procure 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), with production set at the company’s Hazira facility in Gujarat. This order follows the successful induction of a previous batch of 100 units. The K-9 Vajra has demonstrated effectiveness in various terrains, including deployment in the Ladakh sector. L&T has increased the indigenous content in these howitzers, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Enhancing Domestic Defense Manufacturing

These approvals underscore the government’s commitment to bolstering domestic defense manufacturing capabilities. By engaging HAL and L&T, the projects are expected to strengthen the ecosystem of small and medium enterprises within their supply chains, fostering economic growth and technological advancement.

Strategic Implications

The induction of additional Su-30MKI fighter jets and K-9 Vajra howitzers will enhance India’s defense preparedness. The Su-30MKI fleet plays a crucial role in maintaining air superiority, while the K-9 Vajra howitzers provide the Army with advanced artillery capabilities.

These developments mark a significant step forward in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense production, reinforcing the nation’s security infrastructure and operational readiness
