CBI Challenges Kejriwal Discharge Order
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has challenged a special court order that discharged former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others in the excise policy case, calling the decision “illegal” and alleging it ignored material indicating culpability.
CBI Challenges Kejriwal Discharge In Excise Case
In its appeal, the CBI argued that the special court erred in discharging Kejriwal and co-accused persons in connection with alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy. The agency contended that the court failed to properly examine evidence collected during the investigation, including documents and witness statements.
The excise policy case relates to alleged corruption and procedural violations in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy. Multiple arrests were made during the course of the investigation.
Special Court Order Termed “Illegal” By CBI
The investigative agency maintained that the discharge order disregarded material that, in its view, established a prima facie case. It stated that the court’s reasoning did not sufficiently address key aspects of the chargesheet.
The CBI has sought setting aside of the discharge order and restoration of proceedings against the accused. Legal proceedings are expected to continue as the matter moves to a higher judicial forum.
Delhi Excise Policy Case Background
The Delhi excise policy was introduced with the stated aim of reforming liquor sales and increasing revenue but was later withdrawn amid allegations of favouritism and financial irregularities.
Both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate have investigated aspects of the case, examining policy decisions, licensing procedures, and alleged kickbacks. The case remains one of the most high-profile legal matters involving senior political leaders in the national capital.
