CBI Arrests Four in Tirupati Laddu Ghee Adulteration Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended four individuals in connection with the alleged adulteration of ghee used in the preparation of the renowned Tirupati Laddu, a sacred offering at the Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh. The arrested individuals include Pomil Jain and Bipin Jain, former directors of Bhole Baba Dairy in Roorkee, and Apoorva Vinay Kant Chawda, CEO of Vaishnavi Dairy.

Background of the Adulteration Allegations

In October 2024, allegations surfaced that the ghee supplied for the Tirupati Laddu contained animal fats, including beef tallow, fish oil, and lard. These claims, based on lab reports from the Andhra Pradesh state government, led to widespread outrage among devotees and prompted a purification ritual at the temple. The Supreme Court of India subsequently ordered an investigation into the matter.

CBI’s Investigation and Arrests

Following the Supreme Court’s directive, the CBI initiated a thorough investigation into the supply chain of ghee to the temple. The agency scrutinized various suppliers and conducted extensive testing of ghee samples. The arrests of Pomil Jain, Bipin Jain, and Apoorva Vinay Kant Chawda were made after evidence indicated their involvement in the adulteration process.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The arrested individuals have been charged under sections related to food adulteration and fraud. They are accused of compromising the sanctity of the temple offerings by supplying substandard and adulterated ghee. The CBI is also investigating whether there was any collusion between the suppliers and officials responsible for procuring ingredients for the temple.

Temple Authorities’ Response

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the temple, has expressed deep concern over the allegations. They have pledged full cooperation with the investigation and have initiated an internal review of their procurement processes to prevent such incidents in the future. TTD officials have also assured devotees that stringent measures will be implemented to maintain the purity and sanctity of the prasadam.

Public Reaction and Implications

The news of the arrests has elicited strong reactions from devotees and the general public. Many have called for stricter regulations and oversight of food products supplied to religious institutions. The incident has also sparked a broader discussion on food safety and the ethical responsibilities of suppliers involved in the production of religious offerings.

As the investigation progresses, further details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the extent of the adulteration and the accountability of those involved. The case underscores the critical importance of maintaining the integrity of religious practices and the trust of devotees.
