Cargo Ropeway Cable Snaps At Pavagadh, Six Dead

A cargo ropeway cable snapped near the Pavagadh Hill temple in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Saturday, leading to the death of six people. The ropeway, which was being used to transport construction materials, collapsed mid-air and caused the trolley to fall.

Victims Included Operators, Workers, Others

Officials confirmed that the victims included two lift operators, two laborers, and two other individuals who were inside the trolley when the cable broke. Local police and fire brigade teams carried out rescue and recovery operations at the site immediately after the accident.

Operations Suspended, Investigation Launched

Authorities clarified that the passenger ropeway, used by pilgrims, had already been shut down earlier due to bad weather. The cargo ropeway, however, remained operational for construction activities. A formal investigation has been ordered to determine whether equipment failure, maintenance negligence, or operational lapses led to the collapse.

Site And Historical Context

Pavagadh Hill, which rises about 800 meters above the plains, is part of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The location is home to the famous Kalika Mata temple and attracts millions of devotees annually, with ropeways serving as a major mode of access.
