Cargo Plane Skids Off Hong Kong Runway, 2 Killed
A cargo Boeing 747-400, operating for Emirates SkyCargo and leased from ACT Airlines, skidded off the north runway at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday at about 3:50 a.m. local time after arriving from Dubai. The aircraft then collided with a security patrol vehicle and both went into the sea.
Casualties and Response
Two airport security workers in the patrol vehicle were killed. One was confirmed dead at the scene, while the other died later in hospital. All four crew members on the aircraft survived without serious injury.
Aircraft and Operations
The cargo plane was not carrying freight at the time of the incident. Despite the crash, the airport’s two other runways remained operational and unaffected.
Investigation Under Way
Authorities have launched a probe into the incident. Flight and ground-vehicle path data are being analysed. Officials confirmed that the patrol vehicle had been in its designated area and weather conditions were normal at the time of landing.
