Canadian PM Mark Carney to Visit China

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit China from January 14 to 17, marking his first official trip to the country since taking office. The visit comes at a time when both sides are seeking to stabilise and rebuild bilateral ties after several years of strained relations.

Talks on Trade and Cooperation

During the visit, Carney is expected to hold meetings with China’s top leadership, including discussions on trade, economic cooperation, energy, agriculture and broader global issues. Officials have indicated that the talks will focus on improving dialogue and exploring areas of mutual interest while addressing longstanding differences.

Reset in Canada–China Relations

The visit is seen as a significant diplomatic step, as it will be the first by a Canadian prime minister to China in nearly a decade. Relations between the two countries have faced challenges in recent years due to trade disputes, political tensions and diplomatic disagreements.

Canadian officials say the trip reflects Ottawa’s intent to engage with Beijing through dialogue and diplomacy, while safeguarding national interests. Chinese authorities have described the visit as an opportunity to enhance cooperation and restore confidence in bilateral relations.
