Canada Suspends US Trade Talks as Tariffs Hit
The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after last-minute trade negotiations failed, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend talks and announce matching retaliatory measures.
Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse
The tariffs took effect early Saturday after negotiators failed to reach an agreement before an extended deadline. The duties apply to products representing roughly 5% of Canada’s annual exports to the United States, including selected manufactured and consumer goods.
Carney said Canada had entered negotiations seeking improved market access and greater certainty for workers and businesses. He argued that changes made to the proposed US terms at the final stage were unacceptable and undermined confidence in any agreement.
Canada has now instructed its negotiating team to return to Ottawa, with no further talks currently scheduled.
Canada Plans Dollar-for-Dollar Tariff Response
Carney announced that Canada would match the new US tariffs dollar for dollar, framing the response as a measure to protect Canadian businesses and workers.
The Canadian government is also preparing additional support for sectors affected by the tariffs. Ottawa had sought relief from existing US measures affecting areas including steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber, but the two sides were unable to bridge their differences.
Washington, however, blamed Canada for the breakdown and said Ottawa had backed away from elements of an earlier understanding.
US-Canada Trade Dispute Escalates
The latest measures mark a significant escalation in trade tensions between two of the world’s most closely integrated economies. Canada sends nearly 72% of its goods exports to the United States, making access to the American market crucial for Canadian industry.
The dispute also adds uncertainty ahead of future negotiations over the broader US-Mexico-Canada trade framework, which supports extensive cross-border manufacturing and supply chains.
