Canada Seeks Probe After Air India Pilot Fails Alcohol Tests
Canadian authorities have sought a formal investigation after an Air India pilot failed two breathalyser tests ahead of a scheduled international flight from Vancouver. The pilot was due to operate an Air India service departing from Vancouver International Airport but was removed from duty after testing positive for alcohol during pre-flight checks conducted by local authorities.
Safety checks trigger action
According to officials, the pilot failed two separate alcohol tests, confirming that he was unfit to fly under Canadian aviation safety regulations. Following the incident, the aircraft’s departure was delayed while an alternate pilot was arranged to operate the flight. Transport authorities in Canada described the matter as serious and said it raised concerns about compliance with international aviation safety norms.
Canada asks Air India to investigate
Transport Canada has asked Air India to conduct an internal probe into the incident and submit a detailed report explaining how the pilot reported for duty in violation of safety rules. The airline has been asked to outline corrective steps and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Canadian regulators have indicated that enforcement action could follow depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Airline response and wider scrutiny
Air India said the pilot has been taken off flying duties pending an internal inquiry and reiterated that it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol consumption by crew members. The incident comes amid increased scrutiny of airline safety procedures globally, with regulators emphasising strict adherence to pre-flight fitness checks to ensure passenger safety.
