Canada Pushes to Fast-Track Trade Talks With India
Canada has said it wants to fast-track trade negotiations with India and has invited Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss advancing talks on a proposed free trade agreement. The move signals Ottawa’s intent to revive and accelerate bilateral economic engagement after a period of stalled discussions.
Invitation to Advance FTA Discussions
Canadian officials indicated that the outreach is aimed at restarting momentum on a comprehensive trade pact and exploring pathways to formally relaunch negotiations. The invitation to Goyal reflects Canada’s willingness to address pending issues and move talks forward at a faster pace.
Focus Areas for Cooperation
Both sides have earlier identified potential cooperation in areas such as critical minerals, clean energy, emerging technologies, agriculture and supply-chain diversification. Officials believe a trade agreement could help expand two-way trade, boost investment and improve market access for businesses in both countries.
Reset in Bilateral Engagement
The renewed push comes amid efforts by both governments to stabilise and improve relations. Trade talks are being viewed as a key pillar of this reset, with expectations that dialogue at the ministerial level could help set timelines and priorities
