Canada Alleges Indian Minister Amit Shah Involved in Plot Against Sikh Separatists
In a major diplomatic escalation, the Canadian government has accused India’s Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah of involvement in a campaign targeting Sikh separatists in Canada.
The allegations, made public during a parliamentary committee hearing, suggest that Shah, a close political ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was linked to plots of violence and intimidation against Sikh separatist activists residing in Canada.
David Morrison, Canada’s deputy foreign affairs minister, testified that he had confirmed Shah’s role in the campaign to The Washington Post, leading to the publication of a report last month. Morrison did not provide details on how Shah was connected to the plots, which allegedly included threats, extortion, and even murders targeting the Sikh diaspora.
Rising Diplomatic Tensions Between Canada and India
India has strongly denied the accusations, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated.” The Indian government has also accused Canada of harboring Sikh separatists who are considered terrorists by New Delhi.
The tensions have worsened since Canadian police officials accused Indian diplomats of involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader, outside a Vancouver gurdwara in 2022. Both countries have since expelled senior diplomats, with relations between Ottawa and New Delhi reaching an all-time low.
Canada Presses for International Cooperation
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that his government had presented evidence linking Indian officials to illegal activities, including assassinations. Trudeau expressed frustration over India’s refusal to cooperate, despite backchannel attempts to resolve the issue.
The growing rift between the two nations continues to draw international attention as Canada pushes for accountability while India dismisses the claims as unfounded.
