California Says Diwali is Official State Holiday

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill designating Diwali as an official state holiday starting January 1, 2026. With this, California becomes the third U.S. state to formally recognize the festival, after Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Details of the New Law

The law, passed as Assembly Bill 268, allows state employees to take Diwali as a paid holiday. Public schools and colleges may also remain closed on the festival, while students are entitled to excused absences. The recognition extends to communities that celebrate Diwali, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists.

Support from Lawmakers and Communities

The bill was co-authored by Assembly members Ash Kalra and Darshana Patel, with strong support from Indian American groups such as the Hindu American Foundation and the Sikh Coalition. Supporters say the recognition reflects California’s cultural diversity and acknowledges the contributions of the South Asian community.

Broader Impact and Significance

The declaration is being hailed as a milestone for inclusivity in the United States. With California’s move, millions of Indian Americans and other communities celebrating Diwali will now be able to observe the festival as an official holiday without restrictions.
