Calcutta High Court Allows Babri-style Mosque Ceremony To Proceed
The Calcutta High Court has refused to stay the foundation stone laying ceremony for a mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad. The petition before the court had sought a halt to the event on the grounds of potential disturbance to communal harmony. The bench said that maintaining law and order was the responsibility of the state and declined to interfere.
Mosque Modelled On Babri Masjid
The proposed mosque has been announced as being inspired by the structure of the Babri Masjid. The ceremony was scheduled for December 6, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the demolition of the original Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992. The symbolic timing of the event led to heightened political attention.
MLA Suspended Over Controversy
Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, who is associated with the project, was suspended by his party shortly before the ceremony. The party distanced itself from his statements and the plan, saying it had not approved the proposal. Kabir’s suspension followed public criticism over his remarks on the mosque project.
Security Deployment In The Area
After the court order, the state administration arranged heavy security around Beldanga and nearby areas. Police, rapid response units and other forces were deployed to ensure peace. The court directed that the government take full responsibility for law and order during the event. The ceremony went ahead under close monitoring by authorities.
