Cabinet Marks 50 Years of Emergency with Resolution, Honours Democratic Resistance

The Union Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adopted a solemn resolution on June 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency—proclaimed on June 25, 1975. The resolution condemns the suspension of constitutional rights during that period and honours those who “valiantly resisted” its authoritarian measures. The session observed a two-minute silence in tribute to the victims of civil liberties curtailment and political suppression.

Context of the Emergency Anniversary

This year marks half a century since India experienced a significant erosion of its democratic foundations. Declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Emergency allowed the government to rule by decree, curb freedom of the press, arrest opponents without trial, and suspend habeas corpus. The cabinet resolution decried this as a direct assault on constitutional institutions, federalism, and individual freedoms.

Cabinet’s Official Stand

The resolution described the Emergency as an “unforgettable chapter” when the spirit of the Constitution was undermined, and fundamental rights were suspended. It emphasised that the resilience of India’s democratic ethos is anchored in the courage of ordinary citizens who stood against repression.

Nationwide Significance

June 25, 2025 has been officially designated “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” (Constitution Murder Day). By formally acknowledging this day in parliament, the government highlights the importance of remembering history to keep democracy safeguarded. The move aims to educate younger citizens about the significance of constitutional rights and the perils of authoritarian overreach.

Inspiring Civic Vigilance

In its message, the Cabinet affirmed that India’s faith in constitutional governance remains unwavering. The resolution encourages citizens—especially youth—to draw inspiration from those who opposed dictatorial tendencies and to remain vigilant in protecting democratic values.
