Cabinet Clears Kerala Rename To Keralam
The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi has approved a proposal to change the official name of the state of Kerala to “Keralam,” setting in motion the constitutional process required for the renaming through Parliament.
Union Cabinet Approves Kerala To Keralam Name Change
The decision follows a resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly seeking to align the state’s English name with its Malayalam usage. “Keralam” is the name traditionally used in the Malayalam language and is widely seen as reflecting the state’s cultural and linguistic identity.
With the Cabinet’s approval, the proposal will now move forward under the provisions laid down in the Constitution for altering the name of a state. The change will only take effect after the completion of all required legislative procedures.
Constitutional Process Under Article 3
As per Constitution of India, any change in the name of a state requires parliamentary approval under Article 3. The President will refer the proposed Bill to the Kerala Legislative Assembly to seek its views before it is introduced in Parliament.
After receiving the Assembly’s response, the Bill can be tabled and debated in both Houses of Parliament. Once passed and notified, the new name will become legally effective.
Cultural Significance Of Keralam
The move is part of a broader trend where states seek to reflect indigenous names in official records. Supporters argue that adopting “Keralam” strengthens linguistic authenticity and better represents the state’s heritage.
If Parliament approves the Bill, “Keralam” will replace “Kerala” in official documents and communications.
