Cabinet Approves ₹3,626 Cr Extension of Pune Metro Line 2

The Union Cabinet has greenlit a major infrastructure project in Pune by approving the ₹3,626.24 crore extension of Metro Line 2 under Phase 2, marking a significant milestone in the city’s urban transit development. The project will add 12.75 km of elevated corridors and 13 new stations, designed to dramatically improve east–west connectivity across Pune’s rapidly growing suburbs.

The newly approved extension will consist of two sub-corridors: the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk route (Corridor 2A) stretching 1.2 km, and the Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi line (Corridor 2B), covering 11.6 km. These routes will include crucial stops at Kothrud Bus Depot, Chandani Chowk, Kharadi, Siddharthnagar, and Vitthalwadi, effectively connecting high-density residential, educational, and commercial zones.

Pune Metro to Get Connectivity Boost

The project aims to ease the pressure on arterial roads such as Paud Road and Nagar Road. According to projections, daily ridership on the full Wagholi–Chandani Chowk stretch is expected to rise from 96,000 passengers in 2027 to over 3.49 lakh by 2057. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar emphasized that the metro expansion is vital to reduce traffic congestion and ensure smoother commutes for working professionals, students, and local residents.

The extension will integrate seamlessly with existing Metro Lines 1 and 3 at a key interchange point near the District Court, enabling uninterrupted travel across the city and creating a coherent metro network.

Timeline, Funding, and Execution

The extension will be jointly funded by the central government, the Maharashtra state government, and external lending agencies. Preliminary works such as topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations, and initial station design are already underway. Maha Metro, which is executing the project, expects full civil and electrical works to be completed within four years. A mid-term review is planned for 2029 to assess construction progress and financial utilisation.

Currently, Pune Metro operates 33.3 km of its sanctioned corridors, with another 33 km, including the critical Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar (Line 3), slated for completion by March 2026. With the addition of Phase 2, Pune’s public transport infrastructure is poised for a significant leap forward.

The cabinet’s approval underscores the government’s long-term vision of sustainable urban growth, supporting both mobility and environmental objectives. Once completed, the Line 2 extension is expected to ease travel burdens, cut down vehicular emissions, and establish Pune as a model for tier-1 metro transit systems in India.
