Bus Plunges Into Gorge in Andhra Pradesh

At least nine people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a private bus fell into a deep gorge on the Chinturu–Maredumilli ghat road in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The accident occurred early on Friday near Rajugarimetta, a stretch known for sharp curves and difficult terrain.

Dense Fog Linked to the Accident

Police said the area was covered in dense fog at the time of the crash, severely reducing visibility. Preliminary assessment suggests that the driver may have lost control while navigating a bend, causing the bus to veer off the road and plunge into the valley. Rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the spot soon after the incident.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

The bus was carrying pilgrims and local passengers when the accident happened. Officials confirmed nine deaths at the scene, while over 20 injured passengers were shifted to nearby hospitals. Several of the injured remain in serious condition. The ghat road was temporarily blocked as rescue operations continued through the morning.

Authorities Issue Safety Appeal

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution while travelling through forest and hill routes, especially during foggy winter mornings when visibility drops sharply. Local authorities are assessing whether additional safety measures are needed on the route.
