Bumrah Likely to Miss Oval Test, Akash Deep In

India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is expected to miss the series-deciding fifth Test against England at The Oval, starting July 31. Team management has taken this decision as part of a pre-agreed workload management plan to preserve Bumrah’s fitness for future tours. He had been slated to play only three of the five Tests in the series.

Medical Advice Cited

The medical team advised rest after monitoring signs of fatigue in Bumrah’s recent performances. Although he played a key role in earlier matches, his pace and rhythm dipped noticeably during the fourth Test, raising concerns about overuse. The management decided not to risk further strain on his back.

Akash Deep Poised for Return

Akash Deep is likely to return to the playing XI in Bumrah’s place. The pacer had previously impressed in the second Test, claiming 10 wickets. He missed the fourth Test due to a minor groin issue but has now recovered and trained fully ahead of the Oval game. His inclusion is expected to boost India’s bowling attack, which needs to perform at its best to draw the series.

Crucial Match for Series Outcome

With England leading the series 2–1, the Oval Test is India’s last opportunity to level the contest. India’s team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, is keen to strike the right balance between aggression and caution. Bumrah’s rest could open the door for others to step up under pressure.

Focus on Long-Term Planning

The decision to rest Bumrah aligns with India’s growing focus on managing player workloads, especially for senior fast bowlers. As India prepares for major tournaments ahead, including a packed calendar of bilateral series and ICC events, fitness management has become a top priority.
