BSNL Unveils India’s First Direct-to-Device Satellite Service

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced India’s first direct-to-device satellite service, providing seamless connectivity in remote and underserved regions.

Announced by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Wednesday, the service is a collaboration between BSNL and California-based technology company Viasat.

The initiative, initially showcased at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, represents a significant milestone in bridging India’s digital divide. The service has undergone extensive testing and demonstrated its ability to maintain connectivity in areas with challenging terrain and limited cellular coverage.

Advanced Connectivity for Remote Areas

BSNL’s satellite-to-device service is expected to benefit users in remote locations, such as trekkers in Spiti Valley and residents of rural villages. It enables emergency calls, SoS messaging, and UPI transactions where traditional cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. However, the service’s support for regular calls and SMS outside emergencies remains unconfirmed.

Viasat, the technology partner, explained that the service uses non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity via geostationary L-band satellites located 36,000 km above Earth. During IMC 2024, Viasat demonstrated robust two-way communication capabilities, showcasing the potential of the technology.

Awaiting Pricing and Accessibility Details

While the service brings satellite communication to the general public for the first time, details on pricing and user eligibility are yet to be announced. It remains unclear if existing BSNL subscribers will receive the service as part of their current plans or if additional charges will apply.

This pioneering service marks a step forward in expanding connectivity options and making satellite technology accessible to everyday users across India.
