Broad Urges England to Rest Archer for Final Test

Former England pacer Stuart Broad has advised team management to rest Jofra Archer for the upcoming fifth and final Test against India at The Oval. Broad said it would be unwise to overburden Archer so soon after his return from a long injury layoff, warning that “we can’t not have Archer for four years, bring him back, and then bowl him into the ground.”

Broad’s comments come amid growing concerns about the physical toll on England’s pace attack, which has carried a heavy workload throughout the series.

Hussain Echoes Warning

Backing Broad’s suggestion, former England captain Nasser Hussain also recommended that Archer be benched for the final match. He said England’s bowlers look worn out and that rotation is necessary to maintain performance and reduce injury risks.

Archer’s Return So Far

Archer made a strong comeback in the third Test at Lord’s, claiming a five-wicket haul and taking four more wickets in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. However, with the Ashes series just four months away, both Broad and Hussain argue that preserving his fitness now could be crucial for future tours.

Possible Replacements

Broad named Gus Atkinson as a potential replacement for Archer. Josh Tongue, who featured earlier in the series, and Jamie Overton, recently added to the squad, are also in contention. All three are being considered to give the pace attack fresh energy.

Series at Crucial Juncture

England leads the five-match series 2–1 after the fourth Test ended in a draw. The final Test begins at The Oval on July 31. While a win would seal the series for England, team management must balance competitiveness with long-term player management.

With veteran voices calling for caution, the decision on Archer’s inclusion may come down to a fitness test and a strategic assessment of England’s bowling depth.
