Brazil’s Lula Calls for Joint BRICS Response to US Tariffs

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged BRICS nations to formulate a coordinated response to the recent tariff hikes imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking during a press interaction in Brasília, Lula stated that unilateral tariff actions targeting countries like India and China demand collective resistance from emerging economies.

The remarks come days after Trump announced a fresh round of tariffs, including a 25% duty on several Indian exports and threats of 100% tariffs on foreign-made computer chips unless production is shifted to the U.S. These measures have triggered global concern, especially among BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Lula Urges Modi and BRICS to Defend Sovereignty

President Lula said the time had come for developing countries to defend their economic sovereignty and oppose policies that seek to weaponize trade. He emphasized the need for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BRICS leaders to stand united in pushing back against what he described as “economic bullying” by the West.

While India has not yet issued an official response to Trump’s tariffs, government officials have indicated that consultations are ongoing with trade and foreign policy advisors. Lula’s call adds pressure on India to take a public stance, especially as the country plays a key role in global supply chains.

BRICS May Coordinate Action Ahead of G20

With the G20 summit approaching, diplomatic observers believe BRICS countries may use the platform to highlight the issue and seek broader support from other developing economies. Brazil is reportedly pushing for a joint declaration at the next BRICS ministerial-level meeting, which could include trade countermeasures or appeals to international bodies like the WTO.

Lula has been a vocal critic of what he sees as unfair trade practices by developed nations. His latest remarks signal a growing effort to strengthen South-South cooperation in global economic affairs.
