Brampton Temple Cancels Event Amid Khalistani Threat Concerns

In a significant security concern, the Brampton Triveni Community Centre in Canada has canceled a life certificate event organized by the Indian Consulate, citing an “extremely high and imminent threat level” due to anticipated protests by pro-Khalistani groups.

The event, initially scheduled for November 17, was intended to help Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs renew vital life certificates.

Safety Concerns Prompt Event Cancellation

The Brampton Triveni Community Centre issued a statement explaining that Peel Regional Police had provided intelligence indicating a high threat level of violent protests at the venue. “Please be advised that the Life Certificate Event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024, has been cancelled,” the statement read.

The centre also urged Peel Police to address circulating threats against the temple and ensure security for the local Hindu community and general public. “We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu temples in Canada,” added the administration, highlighting a growing sense of vulnerability within the community.

Rising Tensions After Recent Protests

The cancellation follows a violent disruption by pro-Khalistani supporters at a consular camp held on November 3 at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton. The event saw physical altercations as demonstrators clashed with attendees, some wielding flags and sticks. Peel Regional Police confirmed they intervened as tensions escalated, leading to physical assaults.

Strong Reactions from Indian and Canadian Leaders

The incident prompted strong condemnation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who criticized the “deliberate attack” on the Hindu temple and denounced efforts to intimidate Indian diplomats. Modi called on Canadian authorities to act swiftly to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law. “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve,” PM Modi stated.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence, emphasizing that all Canadians have the right to practice their faith freely and safely.

Arrests and Legal Action

Following the violent demonstration, Canadian police arrested 35-year-old Brampton resident Inderjeet Gosal on charges of assault with a weapon. Gosal, identified as the Canadian coordinator for the US-based pro-Khalistani group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), was arrested on November 8 and later released on conditions. SFJ is a banned organization in India, and Gosal is set to appear in Ontario Court at a later date.

The incident has intensified concerns about the security of Indian nationals in Canada. India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed its concern over the safety of Indian citizens and urged the Canadian government to take strict action against those involved in violence.

Strained India-Canada Relations

The incident adds to ongoing tensions between India and Canada, which escalated after Prime Minister Trudeau alleged a potential link between Indian agents and the killing of pro-Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has rejected these accusations as “absurd,” maintaining that the primary issue is Canada’s perceived leniency toward pro-Khalistan elements operating from its territory.

The strained diplomatic ties underscore the need for collaborative efforts between both nations to ensure safety and security for all communities involved.
