BookMyShow Removes Kunal Kamra Amid Shiv Sena’s Objections
Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has reportedly been removed from the artist listings on BookMyShow following objections raised by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. The move came after a letter from the party’s youth leader who claimed Kamra had consistently displayed a pattern of offensive behavior under the pretext of comedy.
The Shiv Sena representative thanked BookMyShow’s CEO for the decision, stating it was a step in keeping “pure entertainment” free from artists who allegedly use the stage to promote personal agendas or insult public figures. The letter, addressed earlier this week, urged the platform not to facilitate shows that disrespect Maharashtra’s leadership and cultural sensitivities.
Shiv Sena Calls for Accountability in Public Performances
In the letter, the Shiv Sena’s youth wing criticized Kamra for targeting the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, during a recent performance in Mumbai, where he allegedly referred to Shinde as a “traitor.” The party described such statements as divisive and inappropriate for a public performance. The incident triggered protests, with party workers reportedly vandalizing a venue where Kamra was scheduled to perform.
The party emphasized that while they respect creative freedom and satire, there is a limit to how far artistic license can stretch before it becomes deliberate defamation disguised as humor. They further stated that the public prefers content that respects cultural and political sentiments over performers who, in their words, “mock democracy under the guise of stand-up.”
Kunal Kamra Responds, Seeks Confirmation
Kamra, in a subdued response on social media, asked BookMyShow whether he had actually been removed from their artist list. Without expressing outrage, he simply stated, “If not, it’s fine. I understand,” suggesting a calm acceptance of the outcome if confirmed. The comedian has not made any further statements addressing the controversy.
Ongoing Investigations and Public Reactions
Following the incident, local authorities reportedly issued summons to Kamra for questioning regarding the contents of his performance. However, he has not appeared for questioning yet. Supporters of the comedian argue this move is another example of increasing intolerance toward dissent and satire, while his critics claim it is high time performers were held accountable for their content.
BookMyShow has yet to issue any formal public comment on the matter. However, Kamra’s shows and name currently do not appear on the platform, indicating that the delisting has already taken place quietly. Whether this is a temporary measure or a permanent ban remains uncertain.
The incident has sparked fresh debate over the limits of freedom of expression, especially in the entertainment industry, and the growing influence of political parties on what can or cannot be said on stage.
