Bolton Says Navarro Tried To Pit Trump Against Modi
John Bolton, former U.S. National Security Advisor, said that Peter Navarro, trade advisor to Donald Trump, once tried to start a fight between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The alleged incident occurred during a meeting where Bolton hoped the leaders would focus on strategic issues like China.
Purpose Of Navarro’s Push
Bolton said Navarro was keen to raise what he viewed as unfair trade practices by India. However, Bolton described those attempts as a “sideshow” that India should ignore while the official negotiators handled trade discussions.
Navarro’s Rhetoric
Navarro has been vocal in his criticism of India’s purchase of Russian oil, labelling it “blood money.” He has also called India the “Tariff Maharaja” and warned that things “won’t end well” if New Delhi does not “come around” in trade talks with the U.S.
Bolton’s Advice To India
Bolton suggested that India should steer clear of heated rhetoric and social media threats. He urged staying focused on hard negotiations and looking for possible accommodations.
