Bolsonaro’s Party Accepts Lula’s Election Victory
Brazil’s Liberal Party (PL), which fielded Flávio Bolsonaro in the 2026 presidential election, has formally recognised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election victory. The announcement on Monday, October 26, came a day after Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat and threatened legal action challenging the results of Sunday’s runoff election.
Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party Recognises Lula’s Victory
Liberal Party president Valdemar Costa Neto issued a statement accepting the results announced by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
However, the party maintained that questions surrounding the election should be addressed through democratic and institutional procedures.
The statement also criticised increased government spending on social benefits shortly before polling, suggesting that the measures could have influenced electoral fairness.
The party did not present evidence establishing electoral fraud.
Lula Wins Brazil Election With 51.79% Votes
Lula secured 51.79% of valid votes in the October 25 runoff, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro, who received 48.21%.
The incumbent president won by approximately 4.43 million votes despite trailing Bolsonaro in the first round held on October 4.
The victory gives Lula an unprecedented fourth presidential term, extending his leadership of Latin America’s largest economy.
Flávio Bolsonaro Plans Legal Challenge Despite Defeat
Bolsonaro has indicated that he intends to challenge Lula’s victory through Brazil’s electoral courts, alleging misuse of political and economic power.
He has also questioned the decision to extend voting hours, although the extension accounted for only a small proportion of ballots cast.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Party highlighted its parliamentary gains, including 121 federal deputies and 29 senators.
The party’s acceptance of the results contrasts with Bolsonaro’s position, although both have indicated that they will continue opposing Lula’s administration.
