BJP Sweeps Gujarat Civic Polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party has registered a major victory in the Gujarat local body elections, winning control of all 15 municipal corporations. The results delivered a serious setback to the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, especially in Surat, where AAP had emerged as a strong challenger in the previous civic polls.

BJP Wins All Gujarat Municipal Corporations

The BJP won all 15 municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Gandhinagar and newly formed civic bodies. The party also performed strongly across municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats.

In Ahmedabad, the BJP secured a dominant majority, while the Congress remained far behind. Party leaders described the result as a public endorsement of the BJP’s governance model in Gujarat.

AAP Suffers Major Setback In Surat

The most significant political shift came in Surat, where AAP’s civic strength collapsed sharply. AAP had won 27 seats in the 2021 Surat Municipal Corporation election and had positioned itself as the main opposition force in the city.

This time, its tally dropped to just four seats, ending its position as a major civic challenger in Surat. The result is a major blow to AAP’s Gujarat expansion strategy, which had relied heavily on its Surat performance.

Congress Fails To Recover In Gujarat

The Congress also failed to make a meaningful comeback in Gujarat’s urban local bodies. Its performance remained weak across key cities, with the BJP retaining overwhelming dominance in civic politics.

The results reinforce the BJP’s organisational strength in Gujarat ahead of future electoral contests. They also raise fresh questions for the opposition, particularly AAP and Congress, over their ability to challenge the ruling party in the state’s urban and semi-urban regions.
