BJP Slams Mamata Over “12:30 am” Remark

A political storm has erupted in West Bengal following comments by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the alleged gangrape of a medical student in Durgapur.

The Incident

The case involves a second-year student of a private medical college in Durgapur, who was reportedly attacked near the college campus. Police confirmed that three suspects have been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Mamata’s Remark

On Sunday, Mamata Banerjee questioned how the student could have left the campus at 12:30 am, asking whether private colleges should restrict students’ late outings. She also said that institutions must take responsibility for student safety.

BJP’s Response

Her remarks triggered sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused her of “victim-shaming.” They argued that records show the student left around 8 pm, not after midnight. The victim’s father also denied that she had stepped out after midnight.

Clarification from Mamata

Amid the backlash, Mamata Banerjee clarified that her comments were “distorted” by the media and said her intention was to highlight institutional accountability for students’ safety.

Broader Debate

The case has intensified debate on women’s safety, institutional responsibility, and political accountability in cases of crimes against women.
