BJP Rejects Alliance Speculation with SAD in Punjab
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has firmly denied any ongoing or planned alliance talks with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), dismissing the claims as baseless and politically motivated. The Punjab BJP issued a strong rebuttal to recent reports suggesting that both parties were exploring a renewed partnership ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.

Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal categorically rejected the speculation, asserting that no discussions were happening either at the state or national level with SAD. He clarified that the rumour appears to have stemmed from remarks made by SAD leaders, which the BJP considers to be unilateral and not grounded in any real dialogue.

The denial comes in the wake of statements from SAD senior leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder, who floated the idea of a possible alliance with the BJP—conditional on the Union Government addressing Punjab-centric concerns like water rights, release of Sikh prisoners, industrial development, and recruitment in the armed forces. Bhunder also insisted that SAD would only consider such an alliance if it remained the dominant partner, stating, “We will remain big brother.”
Baliawal, however, was unequivocal in his party’s stance, emphasizing that the BJP is growing independently in Punjab and has no interest in reverting to old alliances. He cited the party’s recent performance in municipal elections, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and various by-elections as evidence of its increasing support in both rural and urban constituencies.
He also addressed the timing of the rumours, linking them to recent political developments including the re-entry of SAD leader Sikander Singh Maluka and Bhunder’s statements. Despite the stir caused, Baliawal reiterated, “There is absolutely no alliance talk underway.”
