BJP Pushes to Reinstate Elected Government in Manipur
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that the BJP-led central government is actively working to restore a democratically elected government in Manipur. Speaking at a BJP event in Imphal on June 28, Singh emphasized that the restoration of electoral governance remains the key priority now that peace and stability have largely returned to the state.
Peace Takes Precedence
Singh highlighted that over the past eight to nine months, there have been no recorded incidents involving gunfire, signaling a stabilizing security environment. He credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah and central authorities for their efforts in maintaining public order and creating the conditions necessary for democratic elections to resume.
Coalition and Community Engagement
Behind-the-scenes discussions are reportedly ongoing involving central leaders, state MLAs, and representatives from Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. BJP MLA K. Ibomcha described this as a process to build consensus and foster an atmosphere conducive to free and fair elections. Earlier meetings between Singh, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, and Amit Shah further underscore a coordinated approach across party lines.
Legislative Backing Grows
Insights from internal BJP sources suggest that up to 44 MLAs have shown readiness to form a new government once an elected assembly is possible. This level of legislative support provides a robust foundation for a stable, representative government once conditions permit.
Path to Democratic Restoration
President’s Rule has remained in place since mid-February, given the fragile post-conflict landscape. With law and order now under control, authorities are preparing logistical frameworks for conducting elections and reinstating full local governance. The approach stresses inclusivity, community engagement, and administrative readiness.
